Gadolinium and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)

Gadolinium, a metallic contrast dye that is injected in patients undergoing metallic resonance imaging (MRI), has recently been linked to a rare skin disorder in patients with kidney troubles.  Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis can lead to burning, itching, stiffening, or discoloration of the skin.  Doctors think the condition may be under-diagnosed in kidney patients who have undergone MRIs with contrast dyes.

Researchers Take A Second Look at Gadolinium Dyes and NSF

Investigators and scientists from the Division of Nephrology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center recently began reinvestigating the link between "gadolinium based magnetic resonance imaging agents and the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in patients with chronic kidney disease or acute kidney disease," according to an article from Uro Today , a publication for urologists. The scientists also found that the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) depends on "the degree of renal dysfunction, dose of contrast agent," according to the article. NSF is a new condition that develops among kidney disease patients who receive contrast dyes, such as gadolinium, for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). read more

Promising Gadolinium Alternative Could Offer Needed Results for Kidney Patients

A recent study that was published in the journal Radiology may offer insight for patients who are suffering from the debilitating and rare condition known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). A study, conducted by the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, found that kidney patients who are at risk for developing NSF when receiving gadolinium contrast dyes from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) procedures may have less of a chance of developing the condition after receiving hemodialysis. Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is considered a rare multisystemic fibrosing disorder that affects the skin in infected patients, but can also affect organs in patients with renal insufficiencies, according to a study published in the American Journal of Roentgenoloy . read more
