Home : The Effects of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis The Effects of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis
Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy as it is otherwise known, is a disease that appears to affect mainly the skin. But, it can also lead to many other complications such as contractures, restriction of movement, and in some cases, even death.
Effects of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis Relating to the SkinNephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is sometimes known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy due to its symptoms that are particularly related to the skin, and which are most common to the disease. This includes tightening and hardening of the skin, as well as the skin appearing either redder or darker. It also develops plaques, and may feel “woody” and develop an “orange peel” texture. These symptoms are usually limited to the extremities, though at times they may also appear on the trunk of the body.Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis May Lead to Contractures and Restriction of MovementIn addition to the effects on the skin, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis may also lead to contractures caused by the skin thickening, inhibiting flexion and extension of joints. This, in some cases, will lead to overall movement restriction and perhaps even the inability to walk.Effects of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis Which May Lead to DeathNephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis itself is not really a cause of death, but the restriction of movement caused by it could lead to falls that could be complicated, or restrict effective breathing. The effects of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis are mainly related to the skin and NFS is therefore also often called Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy. These symptoms include a hardening, tightening, and discoloration of the skin of the extremities, and occasionally the trunk. The tightening and hardening of the skin however, can also lead to contractures and restriction of movement, and if this affects the breathing, then could result in death.
