Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy is a disorder that seems to occur primarily in kidney patients who have been exposed to gadolinium. It involves the fibrosis of skin, joints, eyes, and other organs. It has only recently been discovered, and since there seems to be a strong correlation between Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy and gadolinium, the FDA has released warnings about using gadolinium-based contrast dyes for MRI scans.
The Symptoms of Nephrogenic Fibrosing DermopathyNephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy is a disorder which involves the Fibrosis of the skin, joints, eyes, and other organs. Most often, symptoms seem to be confined to the skin. This usually includes a tightening and swelling of the skin, especially the skin of the extremities. This may also lead to contractures and a limitation in movement.The Link between Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy and GadoliniumAlthough a definite cause and effect link has not been established between gadolinium and Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy, there does appear to be a strong correlation between the two. Thus, the FDA has put out warnings regarding the use of gadolinium-based contrast dyes in MRI scans.Treatment of Nephrogenic Fibrosing DermopathyA number of treatments are being investigated for Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy, but so far, none of these treatments has been consistently successful.
